Chapter Fourteen

Levi

Last night was one of the most amazing nights of my life, right up there with the day I officially got my license to become a practicing neurosurgeon.

I finally got to make love to the most beautiful woman I’ve ever laid eyes on, underneath a starlit sky in a public park. I should be throwing a fucking rager right now to celebrate, but my anxiety is through the roof.

Any minute now, Aiden will walk into the gym and we’ll shake hands, probably hug like we always do before starting our workouts, and he’ll have no clue that I’ve broken a pact we made years ago to never get involved with each other’s sister.

It may have been a pact we made as teenagers, but knowing Aiden, I’m sure he meant every word. The excuse of “We were young, I thought we were just goofing around” won’t fly with him.

But the worst part isn’t even me breaking our pact. The worst part is that despite feeling awful, I want to do it over and over again, consequences be damned.

“Hey, man.” Aiden touches my shoulder and I jump with fright.

My attention has been at the door, expecting him to walk in, not knowing that he was already here.

“Jesus, man! When did you get here?” I ask, managing to regain my composure.

“I came in a little early to talk with Kyle about fixing some spoiled equipment. So what nasty thing did you do yesterday?”

My heart skips a beat. “What? Did anyone tell you I did something?”

“Of course not. You’re acting a little strange, man. Is everything okay?”

You need to get it together, Levi.

“Everything is peachy, it’s just some work stuff.”

“I’m sure you’ll figure it out, you always do. And once again, I’m sorry for inviting Stella to my grandparents’ anniversary.”

I wave it off. “It’s okay, man. It was just a misunderstanding.”

He places a hand on my shoulder. “Misunderstanding or not, I’ve come up with a way to make it up to you. You and I are going on a double date tomorrow night with my girlfriend and her smoking hot friend Nancy. That is, unless you’re seeing someone.”

“Nope. Just text me the time and venue and I’ll meet you there.”

“Dude, you’re gonna owe me after you meet Nancy tomorrow. She’s your type—hot, tall, blonde, and insanely attractive.”

“I can’t wait,” I say, stepping on the treadmill.

After my awkward workout session—awkward for me at least—with Aiden, I return to the hospital, and as soon as I exit from the elevator, my assistant Sam hands me my post-workout fruit smoothie.

“Your dad called and complained for over fifteen minutes about his new nurse, he said to tell you to call and fire her. Oh, and someone from the National Institutes of Health called and left a message for you.”

My eyes widen in exasperation. “And you didn’t think to lead with that piece of information? Jesus, Sam. What did the message say?”

“That they would get back to you tomorrow with their decision.”

“That’s great. Go tell Ms. Weatherby to come to my office right away.
